Chartwell has four main locations - the car park with cafe, toilets and entrance office; the woodland area with exploration activities for children; the main house, and the gardens. Around the house and gardens are many hard surfaces with wheelchair and puschair friendly routes.

Put aside an hour for the woodland loop as a minimum. There is a short walk across the fields to get there (not suitable for pushchairs) and five activities for children to explore around a loop walk. There's a giant treehouse, a bomb crater with scrambling nets, an old wooden caravan, swings and seesaws. Welly boots are useful for autumn/winter!

In order to go in the main house you must book timed entry tickets at visitor reception. The house probably takes roughly half an hour to walk round. If you plan to tire children out in the woodland first, then we suggest leaving a minimum of an hour and a quarter before your house entry time so you don't need to rush round the woods.

Being a National Trust site, Chartwell's grounds are well signposted, with toilets, helpful volunteers and a good cafe. We explored the woods to begin with, then changed out of our wellies back at the car, before heading to the house. After exploring the house we had a quick look round the gardens and headed to the cafe for a warm lunch.
