In addition to the house and 12 acres of formal gardens, there are 80 acres of ancient meadow and woodlands to explore too. A map of short self-guided walks around the estate can be collected from Visitor Reception. For uninterrupted views across to Weir Wood reservoir and the Ashdown Forest, head up to the top of the garden.
Standen's grounds are partly accessible to wheelchairs and pushchairs. The accessible route around the grounds is shown in the route map.
Well behaved dogs (on short leads) are allowed in the formal gardens and dogs can also be exercised (on lead) in the wider estate. Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed in the house.
Although the ground floor of the house is wheelchair accessible, there are many stairs (with a handrail) to the first floor and no lift. Pushchairs are not allowed in the house at all (there is a covered area where they can be left). If possible, we recommend bringing a baby carrier instead of a pushchair, so that your exploration of the house and grounds is not limited.
The Barn Cafe serves hot and cold meals, snacks and refreshments. A children's menu and microwave for heating baby food is available. Alternatively, bring a picnic to enjoy in the grounds. On sunny days, grab one of the deckchairs on Goose Green to relax in whilst the children play. Or head to the Main Lawn for a game of croquet.
Please note, it is necessary to pay/show your National Trust card on vehicle entry to Standen.
