This corker of a medieval castle not only looks picture-perfect on the outside, but there's plenty to explore on the inside too. Our daughter (5 yrs) absolutely loved her visit here!

  • Climb the towers for amazing views! Shhh... bats roost here!

  • Dress up as some famous castle characters - great photo opportunities!

  • Explore the castle courtyard - discover secret places and learn about what life was like for the castle household

  • Spot huge fish in the moat

Additional events for children are often run during school holidays (there is generally a small charge for these).

Built around 1385, Bodiam was both a defensive castle and comfortable home and is now owned by the National Trust. A picturesque English castle, crossing the moat allows exploration of the castle ruins and the chance to ascend the towers! The gardens provide the perfect setting for incredible family photos.

The paths around the castle grounds are gravel, generally flat and accessible for pushchairs and wheelchairs. Whilst there is level access to the courtyard inside the castle, the towers are reached by steep spiral staircases. During peak periods access to the Postern Tower (via a single spiral staircase) is controlled.

There are two cafes at Bodiam. The Wharf tea-room (by the ticket office) and the Castle View Cafe (located opposite the castle drawbridge). There is also a family-friendly pub opposite the entrance to Bodiam. Picnics are also allowed in the castle grounds.

Although dogs are welcome to explore the estate, they are not allowed in the castle itself.
